I was born in Jonesboro, Arkansas and relocated to Omaha Nebraska when I was three. Growing up in the projects of North Omaha, either you play sports or you get into trouble. Me being an overachiever, I did both! Sports won out though because girls liked jocks and my mother (being a single mom) didn’t skimp on the discipline when it came to trouble. As time passed, I became good enough to get an athletic scholarship in basketball. So, out of Omaha and into Kansas. (Yes, I know, what a change.) After two dismal seasons in Kansas and a groin injury, I moved onto South Dakota (keeping the Midwest theme intact).
But after going unnoticed by scouts, I returned to Omaha for a year before joining the military (Air Force). I was trained as a Military Police Officer, where I learned a lot about Special Ops and became a Drill Sergeant for the Air Force Honor Guard. Though I was very good at my job, I didn’t want to make a career of it, so I chose not to reenlist. Thought I’d travel around the world (NOT).
That summer, I was approached by a photographer who wanted to do a campaign on black pictorial art and it turned out to be legit. Even though I didn’t go around the world, the pictures did. So between that and my time as an exotic dancer (yes, I shook my money maker), I made a great living and discovered something about myself. I am a natural born entertainer.
Living in Washington, DC at the time, the opportunity for actors were few, so I did music videos and local restaurant commercials. A theatre scout saw me and had me audition for an opera (yes, that’s what I said). It turned out to be the greatest thing in my life because it showed me that this is what I was meant to do. So I packed my bags and headed to Hollywood.
I landed a few brief appearances on shows such as Arlis, Judging Amy, The Practice, GNC commercials and more music videos. After a year, Hollywood sent me back home broke with a shallow resume, but I vowed to return. So more modeling and more dancing. But in my spare time, I went to school to learn my craft. I took voice lessons, theatre study, cold calls, and scene study (now I’m really broke). But upon my return a few years later, I was armed with knowledge of the craft and a wiser outlook.
I hit the ground running in 2007 where I landed a recurring role on Mind of Mencia with Carlos Mencia, Chocolate News with David Allen Grier, a billboard on Sunset Boulevard (Absolut Vodka), featured on the History Channel (Great Battles of BC), various voiceovers, Jimmy Kimmel and Jay Leno shows, a recurring role on Sons of Anarchy and an appearance in the number one movie Date Night with Tina Fey and Steve Carrell, as well as various other projects. So hold on because the ride is just beginning.
P.S. Did I mention that I pursued a career in pro bodybuilding and professional wrestling? LOL! Never stop chasing your goals because it’s what keeps you young.
